Back From Leadership

I am back from Leadership, and I am exhausted!  My return flight landed in Colorado Springs yesterday at approximately 11:30 a.m., I stopped to get lunch on the drive home, and the rest of the day, I was in recuperation mode.  I napped all afternoon.  My husband and I flew to Orland together last Monday and spent a day in Epcot.  I had never been before.  It was fun, but I was a little disappointed in the fact that it appeared to be mostly restaurants and gift shops.  But, we did get to see some of the other attractions like Mission Space, Spaceship Earth, and Soarin’.  We were going to do the design a car thing at Test Track, but it began experiencing technical difficulties as soon as we got into line and it ended up being a longer wait so we skipped that one.

Hubby left Orland on Wednesday morning as my stampin’ friends began to arrive.  Leadership was a whirlwind of activities with many new announcements mostly relating to Stampin’ Up!’s renovation of their compensation plan and events schedule since it is quickly becoming a global company with demonstrators all over the world.

I left Orlando exhausted, excited about all the new changes, and loaded down with a lot of free product from Prize Patrol and give a ways.  I am anxious to get into my stamp room.

Today I am posting the card I made for our team swap along with a gift cardholder I made for my roommates.  A word about the card: the sentiment is done in Early Espresso Embossing Powder.  I used this color because the Soft Sued ink the rest of the card is done in didn’t appear dark enough.  It is stamped on white vellum.  Before I stamped the fern design behind the sentiment, I stamped off once.  I also stamped off once before stamping on the Crushed Curry circle.  Another thing you might want to know is I used Best Year Ever Designer Series Paper and ribbon from the Best Year Ever Accessory Pack which are both in the Sale-a-bration Catalog.  You get 1 item FREE from this catalog for every $50.00 you purchase.    The gift cardholder was cased from one I saw elsewhere, but can’t remember who I should give credit to.  Sorry.   The hearts are embossed on vellum using the Happy Heart Textured Impressions Embossing Folder. Hope you like both.

The Day I Left Home & Emboss Resist Technique

The day I left home, it was 1981; I was 24 and married for almost three months.  No, my husband and I did not live with my parents after our marriage.  I did.  My husband was an active duty Army officer stationed in Germany and he had been in Germany for the entire year prior to our wedding.  I lived in Ohio and I was finishing my last year of college.  He came home on leave one week before the wedding.  The day before our wedding, I was commissioned a second Lieutenant in the Army through the ROTC program at my university.    After a two-week honeymoon in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida in the middle of December (we were married Dec. 20), we arrived back at my parents’ home in Ohio and spent another week together before he was back off to his assignment in Germany.   In February of 1981, I finally left home for Ft. Gordon, GA on my own for a three-month Signal Officer’s Basic Course.  I did not reunite with my husband again until late May or early June of that same year.

The morning I drove out of my parent’s drive was gray and chilly.  The weather definitely DID NOT match my spirits.  I was exhilarated!  I was finally going to be out on my own.  There was nothing my mother could do to stop me now!  I was leaving home “the right way.”  My mother’s words…not mine.

My mother was “old school”.  Born in Italy in 1931 and raised a Roman Catholic, she spent a lifetime mastering the fine art of “feeling guilty”.  She immigrated into the United States at the age of 15, and lived with her parents until she married my father when she was 23.   As I grew up, I was always told that being married and having children was the ultimate thing to experience, and if I did, I would not want for more.  Or….SHOULDN ‘T want for more.  On the few occasions I expressed a desire to be out on my own “without” a husband,   I was threatened with disownment.  I was told that if I did that, I couldn’t count on my parents for any kind of help if I ever needed it.  So, I lived at home.  Telling my parents I was joining the Army was a harrowing experience, to say the least.  It is a story in itself, so I won’t go into it here.  I’ll leave it for another time.  Lucky for me, it was the military that introduced me to my first husband, so when I finally did leave home, it was with full parental (mostly maternal) blessing.  My father always followed my mother’s lead.

Adrenaline was running high through my veins the morning I left.  I was ready for the two-day drive alone.  As I kissed my mother and father good bye, Daddy’s last words to me were, “It’s not too late to change your mind, you know.  You can still fly.”

“No, Daddy.  I am doing this, “and I pulled out into the street.  I turned and waved good-bye.  I haven’t been back to live since.  I’ve been home many times to visit.  And since my children have grown up and are out on their own, I often wonder what my life would be like had I chosen to move back home after my divorce.  I sometimes grow nostalgic for the smells of Northeastern Ohio in the summer where I grew up.  I get hungry for Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream that originated in my hometown.  I sometimes yearn for the close companionship of my extended family on a more regular basis and wonder…will I ever move back?

I still have my mother.  She turned 83 years old this past May.  She is a remarkable woman.  Unfortunately, I lost my father in 2004.  As my mother has aged, she has become more and more progressive.  I love her dearly.  I strive to be like her every day.

Here is my project for this week.  I am using one of my favorite stamp sets again…Kinda Eclectic.

Kinda Eclectic Emboss Resist - 2

I used the emboss resist technique on this card.  What’s that?  Well, I am gonna tell  you!.. 🙂

Using a Versa Mark ink pad, I stamped the image I wanted to emboss.  In this case, it was the sun burst from the Kinda Eclectic stamp set.  I then sprinkled Crushed Curry embossing powder over it and heated it with my heat tool.

Then, I used a sponge and Lost Lagoon ink and sponged over the embossed image, drying to get the color to fade off into a lighter shade in the bottom right corner.  When I finished sponging, I wiped the embossed image off with a piece of tissue to remove the excess ink.  And there you go…the ink does not adhere to the embossed image.  I think this turned out kinda sweet, don’t you?

I hope you enjoyed your visit here today and the time you spent reading my ramblings.  Hope it wasn’t too boring.  Until next time…

Happy Stamping!

Mother’s Day Every Day

Happy Mother’s Day to all of you!  It has been way too long since I was last here.  Don’t really know what has kept me away.  I guess you could say that I just haven’t been motivated to do much stamping lately.  But my gift today was the ability to spend the day in my stamp room, and I have enjoyed it very much.

I celebrated Mother’s Day with my son last evening.  He and my husband took  me out to dinner.  My son wanted to take me out today, but I suggested we celebrate early as Mother’s Day is always a difficult day to eat in a restaurant unless you make a reservation weeks in advance.  We never do that.  My daughter takes her last final tomorrow at noon, so she will be home later tomorrow afternoon.  We will celebrate again when she gets home.

My mother and grandmother always said that Mother’s Day should be every day.  We should show our mothers we love and respect them every day, not just on Mother’s Day.  I agree with them.  I never really understood what they meant until I had my own children.  Yes, it is nice to be signaled out on Mother’s Day and treated with a little extra loving, but when we think of all our mothers do for us, we SHOULD celebrate them every day.  I do know that my children love and respect me, so not being able to be with them on THIS day is okay.  Mother’s Day CAN be any day.

The card I have to share today is for a student of mine that will be receiving the Outstanding Language Arts Student Award on the last day of school.  We always have an awards assembly on the students’ last day.   Their last day is the day before the last day of my teaching career.

I can’t believe that MY last day is two weeks away.  I attended the Retirement Tea the district holds every year this past week.  The last few weeks have been an emotional time for me.  I have been feeling  a multitude of emotions in the weeks leading up to my last day.  I will share them at another time.

This card is made with NEW paper.  It will become available in the upcoming Annual Catalog on June 1st.  Since I’m not sure if it is okay to post it yet online or not, I will not tell you the names of the colors or the name of the designer series paper.  I also will not give you the item numbers for it.  Same with the ink.  It’s all new…except for the stamp set or the white paper.  🙂  Here it is.

Your're Amazing Winner

Hope you enjoyed your visit here today.  Until next time…

Happy Stamping!

Hello Sweet Friend

The weather is unbelievable!  There is a saying here in Colorado, and that is “If you don’t like the weather, wait 15 minutes and it will change.”  It is doing just that!  We had close to 72 degrees here yesterday, and today we are expecting what some are saying is going to be our worst winter storm this year.  As I look out the window, the snow is coming down so fast that it is almost a white out.  The temperature today is about 30 degrees colder than yesterday.  You gotta love spring time in the Rockies.  I’ve seen it snow here on May 1st.  It is nice to be inside today, and what is even nicer is my school district is closed tomorrow, so I won’t have to drive in the snow.  We always get a random day in April off, and tomorrow is it.  I would prefer warmer weather, but if we’re gonna have a blizzard, I’d rather be home than out driving to work in it.

Today’s card features the Hexagon Hive Thinlits Dies.  I had an idea awhile ago to use only a portion of the die once it is cut out, but it seems that by the time my ideas ever come to fruition someone else’s do first.  So then I have to say that the card is CASEed.  Well, this card is partially CASEed because I think I saw one somewhere on the internet with only part of the thinlit die on a card.

You get today’s card in two versions and in two different colors.  The first is a simple version, and then I stepped it up a little and added a few more things on the second.  I also changed the colors on the second because the first card looked like someone had spilled red wine on it.  (What a waste of  red wine!) 🙂  Hope you like both, but feel free to let me know which you prefer.

Here you go!  Here’s the “wine” card…
