Spinning Pin Wheel Tutorial

Today I am going to share a card I learned how to make at convention this year.  I call it a spinning pin wheel.  You can pretty much do this with any image you choose; I decided to use a pin wheel.  The neat thing about this is the pin wheel will actually “move!”

Sliding Pinwheel

This is what you will need to create this project:

CARD STOCK

  • Whisper White  (100730) 1 piece measuring 5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ and 1 piece measuring 5″ x 3 3/4″.
  • Daffodil Delight (119683) 1 piece measuring 5 1/4″ x 4″.
  • Gingham Garden Designer Series Paper  (129310) 1 piece measuring 2″ x 2″.

INK

  • Black StaZon  (101406)
  • Melon Mambo (126948)

STAMPS:

  • Tape It  (130712-w or 1307115-c)
  • Best of Birthdays  (132929-clear only)

SUPPLIES:

  • 1/8″ mini brads  (122941)
  • Gingham Garden Designer Washi Tape ( 129314)
  • Stampin’  Dimensionals (104430)
  • Word Window Punch  (119857)
  • Perfect Polka Dots Embossing Folder   (117335)
  • Paper Piercing Tool   (126189)
  • Sampin’ Pierce Mat  (126199)
  • Big Shot Die Cutting Machine  (113439)
  • 2 pennies

HOW TO MAKE THE WINDOW:

  • Start by folding the 5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ whisper white card stock in half to form the card base and set it aside.

Spinning Pin Wheel - 1

  •  Take the 5″ x 3 3/4 ” piece of whisper white card stock and word window punch.  Slide the  long end of the card stock at its center into the punch until it stops.  Make your punch.

Spinning Pin Wheel - 2

Spinning Pin Wheel - 3

  • Slide the card stock up and down aligning the punch with the hole you just made and the sides of the punch with the short ends of the card stock to lengthen the opening.

Spinning Pin Wheel - 4

  • Add washi tape just below the opening or stamp with Tape It stamp set, or do both.  If you choose to stamp and tape, make sure you stamp first about 1″ below the word window opening.
  • Stamp the sentiment “Celebrate” from the Best of Birthdays stamp set in the bottom right corner using black StaZon Ink.
  • Run this piece through the Big Shot using the Perfect Polka Dots embossing folder and set aside.

HOW TO CREATE THE PIN WHEEL:

Spinning Pin Wheel - 5

Spinning Pin Wheel - 6

  • Starting in the bottom right corner of the 2″ x 2″ designer series paper, snip the paper diagonally towards the center stopping just short of it.   I’ve marked the cut lines so you can see exactly just what I mean.  You don’t want to go all the way to the center because then you will end up with four triangles of paper.

Spinning Pin Wheel - 7

Spinning Pin Wheel - 8

  • Using the piercing tool and mat, pierce a hole in the center of this piece and 1 hole in each corner.  (See photo above)
  • Insert a mini brad into 1 corner hole.  Working clockwise, insert the brad into the next corner hole and so on until all four corners are on the brad.  Insert the brad into the center hole and secure.

Spinning Pin Wheel - 9Spinning Pin Wheel - 10

Spinning Pin Wheel - 11

  • Flip pin wheel over and add dimensional to the center back.
  • Remove adhesive backing and attach a penny to the dimensional.

Spinning Pin Wheel - 13

  • Add another dimensional to the penny, but do not remove backing.

CARD ASSEMBLY:

  • Set down pin wheel with penny/dimensional side facing up.
  • Place the opening of the stamped and punched piece over the pin wheel so the dimensional pokes through the word window.

Spinning Pin Wheel - 15

  • Remove dimensional backing and attach second penny.
  • Add dimensionals to the back of the stamped piece as shown.

Spinning Pin Wheel - 17

  • Attach to Daffodil Delight card stock.
  • Shake this piece from sided to side a few times so the pin wheel slides back and forth a few times.  This will round the edges of the dimensional a little allowing it to move more freely in the window.
  • Adhere to card base.

YOU ARE DONE!

Spinning Pin Wheel - 18

I hope you were able to follow the directions for this card.  I tried to make them as simple as possible.  If you have any questions, please feel free to email me.  As I mentioned earlier, you can use this technique with any stamped and punched image.  I think it is cute technique to use for little kids and old people like me who are still young at heart!  LOL!

Until next time…

Happy Stamping!

P. S. A special Thank You goes out to my awesome husband for being the photographer for this project.  I love you!

Catching Up and a Convention Roomie Gift

I finally feel like I am catching up with things around here since we returned from our road trip two weeks ago.  I am telling you, I am better organized when I am at work full-time.  I just haven’t  gotten into the swing of things this summer break.  During the school year my free time is so limited that I know that if something needs done there is no putting it off, because if I do then it will never get done.  My time is tightly planned and packed with all of the things I want to accomplish.  But in the summer I fall into the trap of saying to myself, “Oh well.  If you don’t get to it today, you will have time tomorrow.”  I can’t believe what a procrastinater I turn into.

This past month has also been a little wild in that we were gone for two weeks on vacation and the week after we returned I had surgery on my parathyroids.  It was a 3 hour procedure and I was home the same day, but it took a good 4 to 5 days to really feel like doing much.  So here I am.  I’ve stamped this week mostly in preparation for next week’s Stampin’ Up! Convention.  I can’t wait to get to Salt Lake City and be with all of my stamping friends.

Here is a photo of my roommate gift.  It is a notepad cover.  Hope you like it.

Mosaic Thank You & “Gofur” Status

I’m back! I know it has been two weeks since I last posted. I am still here, just a little behind, that’s all. 🙂

Last Friday, May 23, was my official last day of school for this year. I had stuff created and ready for posting, I just hadn’t done any photographing. Also, since it was the holiday weekend, my husband and I spent it by taking a trip to Glenwood Springs, CO with a couple we know. The weather was GORGEOUS! And, the hot springs was awesome. It was nice to get away even though it was just an overnight trip. I needed a day of rest and relaxation by the pool after the long school year. I can’t believe that next year when I go back, it will be my last year of teaching after 17 years. I’ve decided to retire and start a new chapter in my life. I expect you will be expecting me to create and post things a little more often. I think I might be able to manage it.

We got home from Glenwood Springs last Sunday evening. On Monday, even though it was a holiday, I got right to work. And it has been non-stop all week! It culminated yesterday with my husband and I with a great deal of help from my 26-year-old son, constructing a storage shed in our backyard.

My husband and I got this crazy idea that we needed a backyard shed because as we were cleaning out the garage on Tuesday, we couldn’t believe how much “stuff” we’ve accumulated over the 13 years we’ve been married.  So…on Wednesday we went to COSTCO and bought one of their Lifetime sheds.  It looked easy enough to assemble.  After getting my son to haul it to our home in his truck, we started talking.  “Yes”, he said, “you do need a foundation to set it on. You can’t just set it up on the ground.”  Ok, so much for getting by with spending a “little” money.  On Friday, he came back with his truck and we went to Home Depot to buy everything we needed to build a foundation.  We started right to work building this shed as soon as we got home.  That’s when my life changed.  I became the “Gofur”.  I had to gofur this tool, and that tool, and this thing and that thing, along with sitting on this board to hold it steady while my son drilled and hammered, and standing on that one while he did the same.  I hate being the gofur.  I was the gofur when I was a kid whenever my dad did anything outside around the house.  Gofur status is for kids; not adults.  That’s why you have kids in the first place anyway, isn’t it?  🙂 So they can be your personal slaves, like when you sit down on the couch in the evening and you can’t find the remote so you say to your child, “Where did you put the remote?  You better find it for me right now!”  My dad had a remote, way back in the 60’s when I was a child, even before remotes were invented!  It was me.  He’d sit in front of the televesion, walk right past it to get to his chair, and he would yell, “Josanna…come and turn on the tv. No, I don’t want to watch that; change the station.”  At any rate…we got the foundation and the walls of the shed erected yesterday and today I could hardly move.  My body hasn’t bent and turned and twisted into the positions I was in yesterday in ages.  As we were building, I mentioned that this shed would make a great apartment for my daughter.  That’s another story that I will tell next time.  Enough of this…you are here to see my creation. Well, here it is.

Vellum Treat Boxes–CASED

Two weeks ago, I had the pleasure of attending a class that two of my fellow demonstrators (Cathy Casey & Lisa Myers) conducted using the Artisan Embellishments kit that is in the current Spring Catalog.  We made a lot of beautiful things during the class and ended up using the entire kit.  This is one of the things we made with some of the kit, but what I am posting isn’t the exact item.  When I got home I made a few of these little treat boxes for some of the secretaries at work since I didn’t do anything for them at Christmas or Easter this year.  I filled them with Hershey’s Kisses before I handed them out because we all need a little chocolate break during the day on occasion.  🙂  I know I do!  LOL.

Vellum Treat Boxes

Vellum Treat Box-Top

Here’s what I used to make these boxes.

Stamp Set:  Ciao, Baby  129645 wood/ 129648 Clear

Very Vintage Wheel 117693

Pool Party Card Stock   122924

White Vellum  101856

Pearl Basic Jewels  119247

Artisan Embellishments Kit  129328

5/8″ Flower Trim 126869

Early Espresso Classic Ink  126974

Curly Label Punch  129405

Window Frames Collection Framelits Dies  129021

Sticky Strip  104294

Here’s how I made this box.

  1. Cut a piece of vellum 2 3/4″ wide x 8″ long.
  2. Using the Very Vintage Wheel and Early Espresso Ink, wheel the image onto the vellum.  Set it aside to dry.
  3. To make the top and bottom of the box, use the fourth from the smallest window frame framelit and cut out two pieces from Pool Party card stock.  I’ve included a picture at the bottom of this post to show you what to do with these two pieces. In the photo below, the dotted lines are score lines.  Once each frame is scored, you will cut out the shaded areas.   For the box bottom , run a strip of sticky strip on the inside of each rounded flap.  This will hold your box bottom to the vellum sides when you are ready to assemble.  For the box top, you will also run sticky strip on 3 of the rounded flaps, but these pieces of sticky strip will go to the outside of the box to help hold your ribbon in place. The ribbon is what holds your box top together.
  4. Back to the vellum piece ,  set down your vellum so the long edge of the vellum is at the top.  Starting from the left edge, score the vellum at 1 7/8″, 3 1/2″, 5 5/8″, and 7 1/2″.  Use sticky strip to adhere the box together.  It will go on the 1/2″ flap that you have left hanging at the end of the vellum piece.
  5. Once your box is together, you can decorate it with whatever you want.  🙂
